George police have opened an arson case after a house fire in Meade Street during the early hours of Monday morning claimed the life of one person. However, it later emerged that the sounds were likely caused by the roof collapsing or explosions inside the burning house. Emergency services responded to the scene at around 05:30, where firefighters extinguished the blaze before a body was discovered beneath the debris. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Chris Spies said a 40-year-old man who was found at the scene has been arrested on a charge of arson and remains in police custody. "The identity of the deceased has not yet been established, and the investigation is continuing, with more charges possible," Spies said.
