A second live-action Barbie movie remains possible, but Warner Bros. has yet to secure the actors and filmmakers responsible for the original film’s success.
The situation does not mean Barbie 2 has officially been canceled, but the follow-up cannot move forward in its expected form unless Warner Bros. reaches new deals with the original creative team.
Warner Bros. must therefore negotiate new compensation, profit participation and creative terms following the first film’s extraordinary commercial performance.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson disputed that version of events, saying representatives for the talent rejected the studio’s most recent offer in May and had not submitted a counteroffer.
Robbie, Gosling and Gerwig became closely identified with the first film, making their participation central to Warner Bros.’ preferred sequel strategy.
