JULY’S MYSTERY STONE was Amazonite — a striking green feldspar named for a river it’s never actually been found near, colored by trace elements that stumped mineralogists for a century, and used for jewelry despite being soft enough to scratch with a knife. None of those contradictions was enough to throw off Tracy L. Gibson of Studio D Jewelers in Woodstock, IL, who identified the stone and was the first name out of the hat.
