The Albanese Government has reduced net migration sharply, but further reforms will be needed if it is to meet its promised target by 2027-28. The Prime Minister says net migration has fallen by 45% since its peak in 2022-23 of over 500,000 and that he intends to bring net migration down to 225,000 by 2027-28. Who should Australians believe? The Labor Government has taken additional measures in the past six months to bring net migration down further. But has it done enough to get to the PM’s promise of net migration in 2026-27 at 245,000 and in 2027-28 at 225,000? The policy changes listed above would ensure the Prime Minister’s commitment to get net migration down to 225,000 is met.
