The council announced that Somerset Council had asked it to take on the site's grass cutting and general grounds maintenance, a move it says will help ensure the cemetery remains well cared for for families with loved ones buried there.
In a statement, Wellington Town Council said: "We are delighted that Somerset Council has asked us to take on the maintenance of the cemetery at Rockwell Green.
The town council said it had only assumed maintenance responsibilities two weeks ago and warned it would take a few more visits before the cemetery reaches the standard it is aiming for.
While Wellington Town Council is now responsible for grass cutting and general upkeep of the grounds, Somerset Council remains responsible for the cemetery itself.
The statement added: "To be clear, we are responsible for grass cutting and general grounds maintenance whilst Somerset Council retains responsibility for the cemetery as a whole."
