Colin Davies, who lives with his wife, Edwina, on Park Street in Hereford, has been growing sunflowers since visiting the Welsh beauty spot two years ago, when he came across a sunflower farm which was giving away free seeds. These seeds were used for his first batch of sunflowers, and have since been recycled, and this year, have grown in the form of around 40 of them. 82-year-old Mr Davies, who has lived on Park Street for his whole life, said although the current heatwave and drought conditions have affected the plants, and it may not have been their best year, they have still grown to around seven feet tall. Most standard garden sunflowers grown in the UK reach between 2.5 and four metres (eight to 13 feet) tall, although dwarf varieties can be much shorter.
