The final concept design has now been unveiled, with the new facility to include a new leisure and community centre, a new multiple-lane shale track, a new 3G pitch and a new play park. Addressing all gathered at the July 23 monthly meeting of the local authority, Councillor Varsani (SF, Dungannon DEA) commented: “It has been encouraging to see the progress at Gortgonis, with construction of the new recreation centre expected to begin in early 2027. “This major investment will deliver enhanced educational, sporting, and community facilities, benefiting the people of CoaIisland and, of course, the wider area, for generations to come.” Referring to the planned new facilities at Gortgonis, and also to the £3.6m upgrade to facilities at the Mid Ulster Sports Arena (MUSA) in Cookstown, the Council Chair added: “These projects and events demonstrate our continued commitment to investing in healthy, active communities, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact that they will have across Mid Ulster.”
