Review by Felicity WongAn absolute triumph – the performance of Manon by international stars tenor Pene Pati and soprano Amina Edris. More than 4000 people are coming from outside the Wellington region to share the tingly experience of human voice emotions, backed by the superb Wellington Orchestra. In real life, Pene and Amina are a married couple – New Zealand opera stars now living in Paris and working in major venues. Another person who loves opera is local Sally Abernathy, who six years ago (during COVID) proposed the absurd idea that Wellington should put on its own annual opera. But regardless of that oversight, the best of homegrown talent, measured against international standards of excellence, was on offer at Wellington Opera’s production of Manon.
