Members of Parliament have raised concerns over delays by the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) to connect customers to the national electricity grid. Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (Central), UEDCL officials were questioned over the growing backlog of customers who paid for electricity connections but are yet to be connected. Patrick Nsamba said more than 400,000 Ugandans who made payments to the former electricity distributor UMEME had not received connections since UEDCL took over distribution services. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has raised concerns over increasing cases of distress among Ugandan migrant workers abroad, particularly in the Gulf region. The developments come amid growing calls for improved service delivery, accountability and protection of Ugandans both at home and abroad.
