'Mixed Feelings': South Wairarapa Wastewater Treatment Upgrade Secures New SiteJuly 31, 2026WairarapaA major South Wairarapa wastewater infrastructure upgrade originally planned for gifted land is now planned to be built on a neighbouring site, but "mixed feelings" remain from those who live nearby.
South Wairarapa District Council endorsed plans to lodge resource consents for the upgrade on an almost 74-hectare block of farmland at a meeting on Thursday.
If consents were approved, the council would use treated wastewater to irrigate about 46 hectares of the site to produce commercial baleage.
Martinborough and Greytown wastewater treatment plants would have Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR) installed as the primary process for nutrient removal, and the Greytown wastewater treatment plant would also have an upgraded UV disinfection system to reduce pathogen risk.
As per the consent at Featherston’s wastewater treatment plant, a Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF) system would be installed for nutrient removal.
