The Luna County Sheriff’s Office is in the early stages of an investigation into the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old Deming resident early Sunday morning. According the Sheriff’s Office, Verdugo said he found 18-year-old Uziel Barrera near a Chrysler 300, which Verdugo allegedly believed was being burglarized. Authorities said Verdugo then retrieved a .22-caliber revolver from inside the residence, returned outside and fired one shot, striking Barrera in the head. Barrera was later identified through photographs, and Verdugo was arrested and charged with an open count of homicide. Sheriff’s officials emphasized that the investigation remains active and that detectives continue to process evidence, conduct interviews and review the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
