A pair of Golden Fox work boots on Amazon says it’s “Made in USA.” This is also the case with a pair of Thorogood boots on Walmart‘s website, which also claim to be “Made in the USA.” The biggest finding is that Amazon and Walmart’s AIs—known as Alexa and Sparky, respectively—can detect and flag such fraudulent claims, but they won’t do so simply because it does not make business sense. “A straightforward request for ‘Made in USA’ products produced a flat refusal, but we uncovered that the system had access to the data and the ability to produce a complete answer all along.” The research paper said such findings raise questions about AI’s credibility in making “murkier judgment calls,” like if the consumer starts asking for recommendations on the best products.
