The Cubs landed their veteran starter, announcing the acquisition of Kevin Gausman from the Blue Jays on Sunday night. Gausman is a clear upgrade over their targets, as Gausman gives Chicago a pitcher who can plugged right into a potential playoff rotation — perhaps even as the Cubs’ top starter. Now in his age-35 season, Gausman has a 4.38 ERA, 23.5% strikeout rate, and 6.7% walk rate over 127 1/3 innings. This kind of durability is just what the Cubs need for their injury-plagued rotation, and Gausman will join Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd as the projected top three. Ken Rosenthal and Mitch Bannon of The Athletic first reported that Gausman was being traded to Chicago.
