Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels, led by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and active since 2009, has been awarded £1.9 million from the Scottish Government’s Nature Restoration Fund, managed by NatureScot. Gail Turney, programme manager for Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels at the Scottish Wildlife Trust, said: “We are delighted to receive this funding, which will allow us to progress our work for red squirrels even further over the next two years. Since 2009, Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels has collected more than 250,000 squirrel records and led major conservation successes, including the reappearance of red squirrels in Aberdeen’s gardens and parks after near-extinction in the area. In the south of Scotland, where the risk of grey squirrel incursion is constant, a new grey squirrel control officer will be appointed. Collaboration will continue with groups such as the Red Squirrel Forum for South Scotland and the Red Squirrel Recovery Network to protect priority red squirrel habitats in Dumfries and Galloway and the Borders.
