Chennai: A petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Monday, on the instructions of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, seeking the release of 26.945 TMC of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu on pro rata basis by Karnataka, which had not abided by the earlier orders of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC). A Tamil Nadu government press release said that 26.945 TMC water should have been received at Biligundlu from the Krishnarajasagar (KRS) and Kabini reservoirs as the catchment areas of all reservoirs in Karnataka had received copious rains. The release of 4.536 TMC ordered by the CWMA was abysmally low, the release said, adding that the petition in the Supreme Court was filed since Karnataka failed to release Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water on a pro rata basis. Earlier, the CWRC and the CWMA had asked Karnataka to release 3500 cusecs of water daily from July 29 to August 12 from KRS and Kabini and ensure that the water reached Biligundlu. But between July 20 to August 2 only 158 cusecs to 350 cusecs of water was received per second at Biligundlu, the release said.
