President Joseph Boakai, over the weekend, took a firm decision to dismiss and suspend senior members of the country’s security forces allegedly linked to an international cocaine trafficking network. The President’s action follows weeks of mounting public pressure after the local media compelled members of the joint security apparatus to come clean on names of suspects linked to several drug seizures. While The New Dawn commends President Boakai for taking this first bold step toward dismantling such a dangerous trafficking network, this paper believes the alleged infiltration of an international drug cartel into the upper ranks of the country’s security apparatus is a matter of grave national concern that must not be taken lightly. Experience has shown that narcotics operations of this magnitude are rarely carried out by a few individuals acting in isolation. If the fight against drugs is to be won, there must be no sacred cows and no shielding of anyone, however highly placed.
