Absa has become the first bank in South Africa to allow customers to book Smart ID card applications directly through its banking app, making it easier to secure an appointment before visiting a participating branch. The new feature forms part of the bank’s expanding partnership with the Department of Home Affairs and complements the rollout of walk-in Smart ID services at selected Absa branches. At present, the service is available only for Smart ID re-issues, meaning applicants must already have either a green barcoded ID book or an existing Smart ID card. More branches joining the programmeAbsa recently expanded its Home Affairs partnership by adding new branches across the country and introducing mobile units to assist with Smart ID applications. Although the app notes that service fees may apply, Absa said it is currently charging only the standard Department of Home Affairs Smart ID replacement fee of R140.
