He began by outlining the basis of the defendant’s guilty plea, which was that he and the victim were in an “on-off” relationship and that during the argument, emotions became “heightened” and he restrained the woman. He did this by holding her down on to a bed with such force that she suffered bruising to her chest and neck. Passing sentence, Recorder Ciaran Rankin told the defendant, whose address was given as Dent Place, Egremont: “With your guilty plea, you have accepted that you went beyond what was reasonable.” Recorder Rankin imposed a 12-month community order, with 100 hours of unpaid work as punishment and costs of £750. The judge also imposed a non-contact restraining order, which will be in force for five years.
