Keeping a regular daily routine may be one of the simplest ways to improve health as we grow older. A new study from the University of Missouri suggests that following a predictable daily schedule may reduce both physical pain and symptoms of depression, even among older adults who struggle with insomnia. Many older adults find it harder to fall asleep, wake up several times during the night, or wake much earlier than they would like. As expected, people with insomnia generally reported more pain and higher levels of depression than those who slept well. Older adults who followed regular daily routines reported less pain and fewer depressive symptoms regardless of whether they had insomnia.
