Restoration of historic 70-mile canal takes 'major step forward'

Over the last few years, the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust has been rebuilding Pewsham Locks, which was a busy site in the nineteenth century with a lock-keeper's cottage, wharf, and carpenter’s workshop.
Work has now begun to connect the Bottom Lock to the restored stretch of waterway leading towards Lacock.
This is the latest stage of the trust’s project to reopen 70 miles of canal and towpath for public use.
An open day will be held on Saturday, August 8, which will give locals a glimpse of the Pewsham Locks restoration.
Once completed, the restored waterway would stretch from the Kennet & Avon Canal near Melksham to the Thames & Severn Canal near Cricklade and the River Thames near Abingdon, connecting Chippenham, Calne, Royal Wootton Bassett and Swindon.
