Energy waste: an opportunityThe vast majority of companies and institutions that hired me for energy consulting shared a common trait: energy waste. As a rule, this waste is not obvious, nor does it even show up in the metrics typically used in the day-to-day operations of industries, businesses, and institutions. Reducing waste presents a compelling opportunity. I often found that significant loads were not actually being controlled; they would run idle for hours, wasting energy. The core process involves: (1) identifying the waste, (2) establishing controls to reduce it, (3) systematically monitoring via metrics, and (4) fine-tuning those controls to optimize results.
