Four new community murals have been unveiled at Bethnal Green station, continuing the rollout of mosaic roundels at London Overground stations. While most stations get one or two roundels, Bethnal Green got four – two outside the station entrance, one just past the ticket barrier and one up on Platform 2 (outbound from Liverpool Street). The four ceramic roundels tell the story of Bethnal Green and the Weaver line, celebrating the area’s textile heritage, from the Huguenot silk weavers who helped shape Spitalfields to the looms, bobbins and shuttles that defined the industry. The murals feature references to local heritage, including curry leaves, Daniel Mendoza – the Jewish boxer – and local bus routes. They also reward a close look, as each of the four is subtly different and also references local landmarks such as the Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club and Arnold Circus.
