Mr Davidson arrived at Chelmsford on 16 January 2024 and was held on remand. Shortly before midday the other prisoner returned to the wing and raised the alarm when he could not get into the cell and Mr Davidson failed to respond. Following Mr Davidson’s death, Chelmsford activated post‑incident procedures designed to support prisoners and staff after a death in custody. At an inquest held in Essex in October 2025, with findings released in July 2026, the coroner concluded Mr Davidson died as a result of hanging.
