Many of those involved face deportation from Britain for overstaying visas or working illegally. The trade is advertised openly on social media, with videos of migrants in the backs of lorries and promotional images of European landmarks. The surge prompted calls from several European leaders for temporary restrictions on Spain’s participation in the Schengen free-travel zone.
