Illegal migrants are being smuggled out of the United Kingdom across the Channel to take advantage of Spain’s regularisation programme for undocumented residents, according to a Telegraph investigation.
People-smugglers are using weaker UK border-exit controls to hide migrants in lorries for ferry or train crossings to France.
Many of those involved face deportation from Britain for overstaying visas or working illegally.
The trade is advertised openly on social media, with videos of migrants in the backs of lorries and promotional images of European landmarks.
The surge prompted calls from several European leaders for temporary restrictions on Spain’s participation in the Schengen free-travel zone.
