Although conversations about student success often devolve into political games and finger-pointing, the fundamental challenge for high schools isn’t a lack of caring educators or committed communities. What this means for high schools is that the demands of education need to change — to focus on exposure and engagement rather than just college preparedness. Instead of locking students into just one future or just one measure of success, high schools must focus on preparing students for all of it. America needs a new approach to preparing students for life after high school. The strongest high schools of the next generation will not simply prepare students for tests or graduation.
