The Vatican has appointed an interim leader to oversee the Archdiocese of Rabat while it investigates allegations of sexual misconduct against Cardinal Cristóbal López Romero, according to Africa Radio, citing AFP. The Holy See named Father Mario León Dorado, the current Apostolic Prefect of Laayoune-Sahara, to temporarily lead the Archdiocese of Rabat during the investigation. In a statement, López Romero said he remains Archbishop of Rabat but has suspended the exercise of his authority while the Vatican’s preliminary investigation is underway. López Romero has denied the accusations, saying he committed “neither assault, violence nor sexual harassment,” but stepped aside to allow the investigation to proceed without interference. Father Mario León Dorado, a Spanish priest of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), has served the Catholic Church in Laayoune-Sahara for nearly 25 years.
