Deputy transport minister Hasbi Habibollah said a spike in cable theft cases has caused total losses of RM50 million across Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd and the East Coast Rail Link project. Deputy transport minister Hasbi Habibollah said the proposed legal amendment is expected to be tabled in the next parliamentary meeting. Hasbi was responding to Hatta Ramli’s question on the government’s measures to address travel disruptions due to cable theft. Hasbi said the existing penalties were too lenient given the damage and disruption to train operations caused by cable theft. Hasbi said the ECRL project alone had recorded 71 cases of cable theft with estimated losses of RM4.06 million, and 13 cases of equipment theft and damage, with estimated losses of RM0.69 million.
