In the early 2000s, a 15-year-old girl placed in a care home in Bradford, UK, was religiously married to Raj Zulqarnain, a British man of Pakistani descent, during an Islamic ceremony. The BBC reports the ceremony took place with the presence of her assigned social worker, despite staff warnings about the exploitation. According to West Yorkshire Police, seven other men were also convicted in connection with the case. Other men also abused her, including Basharat Ali, previously jailed for sex crimes and reconvicted last June. West Yorkshire Police acknowledged ‘serious failures’ in protecting minors and pledged increased investment in prevention and investigations.
