Srinagar, Aug 2: BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Ali Khatana on Sunday hailed India's progress in clean energy and sustainable infrastructure, saying the country has emerged as a global leader in green growth under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Khatana further welcomed the addition of 29 GW of solar and wind energy capacity during the first half of 2026, taking India's total renewable energy capacity to nearly 288 GW.
He said the expansion of rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana had accelerated the country's clean energy transition while benefiting millions of households.
Referring to India's global standing, the BJP leader said the United Nations had recognised the country as a "solar superpower", with solar capacity increasing more than fifty-fold since 2014.
He added that renewable energy now accounts for nearly half of India's installed power generation capacity, reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports and strengthening energy security.
