“The Promise,” by Rachel Yoder
['Rachel Yoder']
The New Yorker
In the hallway off the kitchen, Miriam pulled a box of games from a high closet shelf.
The second-oldest girl, Rebecca, did the cooking.
She was older than Birdie’s father, at least.
She worked at the meat locker, where Birdie’s father had once taken her.
A single bulb illuminated the room, and Birdie wanted to leave as soon as she was inside.
