The electricity demand created by artificial intelligence is usually presented as a simple supply problem.
Data centers are expected to account for only around 3% of worldwide electricity demand by 2030.
That is substantial, but data centers will still account for only a fraction of total global demand growth.
According to the IEA, an AI-focused data center can be around ten times more capital-intensive than an aluminium smelter with an equivalent electricity demand.
They may be the regions that develop the best combination of generation, grid capacity, flexible contracts and rapid connections.
