A passenger bus plunged into a ravine in northern Algeria on Friday, killing at least 27 people and injuring dozens more, in the latest in a series of deadly incidents that have highlighted chronic shortcomings in infrastructure, safety standards and emergency preparedness across the country. The bus, travelling from Setif towards Algiers, left the road near El Karma in Boumerdès province, about 50 kilometers east of the capital, and crashed into a deep ravine. In mid-July, a fire at an orphanage on the outskirts of Algiers killed 11 people, most of them children, and injured 19 others. Around the same period, wildfires sweeping northern Algeria amid a severe heatwave claimed at least six lives, forced evacuations and stretched firefighting resources thin. These successive disasters – a major road accident, a fire in a childcare facility and deadly wildfires- point to deeper dysfunctions.
