The overwhelming 90% remain in the unorganised or informal sector, which functions without minimum wage guarantees, adequate social security, or dignified conditions of employment. The neoliberal economic model has intensified exploitation by privileging unfettered capital mobility, financial liberalisation, and corporate-driven reforms, while weakening the regulatory power of the state. In urban centres, the platform economy, presented as an innovation-driven sector, has instead turned into a mechanism for bypassing labour protections, with workers forced into precarious, pay-per-task arrangements. The structural imbalance between rising corporate profits and declining workers’ share of income highlights the core contradiction of neoliberal India.
