The Simmons Street and adjacent city parking lot revitalization project is on track for completion this fall, bringing major upgrades to downtown Galesburg with the support of a $2.1 million Rebuild Illinois Downtown and Main Streets Grant.
Since breaking ground on March 31, the project has made significant progress, with most of Simmons Street, the Prairie Street intersection, and the west half of the parking lot completed.
By mid-September, concrete work will conclude, followed by final grading of the east parking lot and asphalt preparation.
Asphalt paving is set for late September, with a 10-day curing period before pavement markings are added in early October, when the roadway and parking lot will reopen to traffic.
“The City of Galesburg is truly grateful for the Rebuild Illinois grant that made this project possible,” said Aaron Gavin, Director of Public Works.
