Sibling Rivalry or Sensory Rivalry?
[]
Psychology Today: The Latest
Both children’s sensory needs are valid and related to their disabilities, but when one sibling’s needs are being met, the other’s needs are not.
In other words, the sensory seeking child legitimately needs more sensory input, and the sensory avoidant child legitimately needs less sensory input.
Many can also understand that their sibling’s sensory needs are different.
While sibling conflict over sensory input is usually more intense, parents and children can also struggle with each other’s opposite sensory needs.
For neurodivergent families, talking about sensory needs and supports is a must and should be as common as talking about what’s for dinner.
