Who was Ruthe of Meritania and why was she in Elizabethan Amersham?

Ruthe may have travelled to London with her father.
RutheLike Mary Fillis, Ruthe was almost certainly a servant.
We assume that Ruthe worked for one of the wealthiest families in Amersham with a London connection, as these would have been most likely to have a black servant.
Amersham Museum is working with illustrator Elly Bazigos to imagine how Ruthe of Meritania may have looked in 1575 to add her to the museum’s Timeline and these are the first drawings produced by Elly.
Amersham Museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, and Bank Holiday Mondays, 12 noon to 4.30pm.
