Law enforcement officials dealt a massive blow to international drug trafficking networks after seizing a multi-million rand consignment of cocaine at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Friday. National police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, says 95 kilograms of cocaine, worth an estimated R28 million, was confiscated at the airport's cargo section during an intelligence-driven operation. The operation was launched following a tip-off from the SAPS Crime Intelligence Border Integrity Unit. Members of the SAPS Visible Policing Unit at the airport then moved in to operationalise the information, working closely with Customs officials and Menzies Aviation personnel to secure the illegal cargo. Forensic investigations are ongoing, as detectives work to identify and apprehend those involved in the attempted smuggling operation.
