Vernon NewsInsect with gills are common in the Okanagan and around the worldHoly rolly polliesPhoto: Ayla Smith Ayla Smith came across a very interesting critter recently that goes by several names. In Britain they are commonly called a woodlouse, or a doodlebug. In Scotland they are commonly called a slater while in North America they are called a pill bug, sow bugs, clown isopods and wood bugs. Bug expert Steve Ball, with BugMaster in Kelowna, said the bugs come in numerous colours although the most common for this region is black. The gills must stay moist to function, which is why they're found under rocks or other areas that retain moisture.
