Burma News International
Clashes between the Myanmar military junta and the ethnic Arakan Army (AA) have intensified in western Myanmar's Rakhine (Arakan) State, with fighting erupting simultaneously across three locations in Kyaukphyu Township.
At times, the sound of gunfire and heavy weapons is extremely loud," a male resident of Kyaukphyu told DMG.
"The military likely believed the Arakan Army was focused only on Sanae and advanced.
"The Arakan Army is in a position to seize Kyaukphyu at any time.
Locals and observers suggest these strategic withdrawals indicate that the Kyaukphyu front presents unique military and political constraints for the Arakan Army, particularly regarding China's significant geopolitical and economic interests in the area.
