Metropolitan Issues Remain Front Of Mind For Hamilton’s Amalgamation DecisionHamilton City Council will make a decision on its preferred pathway for local government reform next week, with the issues that have informed Hamilton’s long-held position on regional governance remaining the top priority.
In May, central government announced the voluntary Head Start process, which invited councils to put forward proposals for local government reorganisation by 9 August 2026.
Hamilton City Council initially looked at three potential merger options, and these were later expanded to six.
Taupo, Waitomo and Otorohanga could also be part of this merger, depending on a decision from those councils to support it.
"This is a significant decision that will shape the future of local government in the Waikato, and it's important we get this right.
