Southeastern Utah’s high desert landscape of Bear Ears National Monument has been cut by roughly 90% during the most recent Trump administration. A year later, President Donald Trump shrank the boundaries of both Bears Ears and the nearby Grand Staircase-Escalante National monument. Trump also eased restrictions on motorized travel, vegetation clearing and livestock grazing on what little remains of both monuments. Trump’s order also terminated the Bears Ears Commission, which represented the five tribal nations that helped develop the monument’s management plan. The administration’s proclamations also argue that national monument status was unnecessary because the lands in question were already protected by other federal laws and regulations.
