UN Secretary-General António Guterres made a statement Wednesday calling for fresh talks to help rebuild trust between Cyprus island’s two divided communities, in a move to resolve the decades-long tension and find a sustainable political solution. During his visit, Guterres met with Greek Cypriot leader, Nikos Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhürman. The Turkish Cypriot administration has refused to accept this decision’s legitimacy and denounced the EU for its involvement in the country’s domestic affairs. Cyprus joined the EU in 2004, but it is only the internationally recognized Greek Cypriot government in the south that directly benefits. Cyprus has a long history of inter-communal conflict and has been officially divided into two parts since 1974.
