The continued dominance of veteran political elites raises an important but under-theorised question: Is Nagaland gradually evolving into a gerontocracy? Nagaland is not yet a classical gerontocracy, but it increasingly exhibits the structural characteristics of gerontocratic governance. Nagaland increasingly reflects these characteristics. Nagaland, therefore, contributes to broader debates on democratic ageing across the Global South. If democratic succession remains deferred indefinitely, institutional resilience may gradually give way to democratic stagnation.
