The next frontier of experimental rap is being built on sentient sound collages—at least that’s what it sounds like. But my favorite is Philly-based crooner awfultop, whose Paris mixtape, from last October, is one of my most-played this year; the sound reminds me of the slyly unsettling euphoria that comes from hitting a fresh weed pen. I’ve been playing “thrills,” from awfultop’s new bittersweet EP, over and over like it could expire at any moment.
