Nairobi, 31 July, 2026 / 4:57 pm (ACI Africa). Dr. Claudia Giampietro from the Vatican’s Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors has cautioned that the distortion of the Evangelical vows of poverty, obedience, and chastity within the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (ICLSAL) can lead to vulnerabilities. Speaking during the July 30–31 Conference of Catholic Sisters in the Legal Profession (CASILEP) in Nairobi, Dr. Giampietro said that Consecrated persons are not vulnerable by definition, but vulnerability is frequently relational and situational. “The evangelical counsels are not causes of vulnerability, but their distortion can be,” she said on Thursday, July 30, at the conference that brought together Catholic Sisters serving in the legal profession across Africa and other ICLSAL members. Dr. Giampietro explained that vulnerability in consecrated life often emerges where different forms of dependency converge, including community life, formation, ministry assignments, housing, economic support, healthcare, and spiritual accompaniment.
