On July 29, 1940, Sigmund started on a quest to set a new world record for the longest recorded non-stop open water swim. After swimming a 292-mile stretch, Sigmund was greeted by a crowd in Caruthersville, celebrating his new record on Aug. 2. Sigmund stood at 6 feet tall, weighing 197 pounds, leading up to his historic swim down the Mississippi. The record-breaking swim to Caruthersville did experience some hiccups and obstacles for the 30-year-old. Although he no longer holds the world record, this achievement still ranks in the top 50 for greatest open water swims in history.
