Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway filed a federal lawsuit July 22 against Kansas City, saying the city’s Minority and Woman Business Enterprise (MWBE) contracting program unlawfully uses race and sex in awarding public contracts.
"My colleagues and I introduced a package of ordinances to begin the process of reimagining Kansas City’s business enterprise programs following the recommendations of the City’s Disparity Study and recent legal developments.
"These proposals begin an important public conversation about creating programs that expand opportunity, support small businesses, and remain legally sustainable for years to come.
"While guest hosting Mundo in the Morning on KCMO Talk Radio, Patrick Tuohey spoke with Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas about the city’s race- and sex-conscious contracting program.
The city’s own consultants recently told the council it lacks the factual basis to continue the program."
