A SmartAsset study calculated how much of each state's federal income taxes was paid by the top 1%. The top 1% of earners make 19% of incomes in the US but pay 37% of all federal income taxes. SmartAsset ranked all 50 states by the percentage of federal income tax collected that is paid by the top 1% of earners, using the most recent personal income tax return data from the IRS covering the tax year 2022.
