FARGO, ND – With the Fargo City Commission set to vote on the preliminary budget on Monday, Commissioner Michelle Turnberg is pushing for deeper cuts before setting the budget ceiling. Under municipal rules, once a preliminary budget is approved, the spending limit is locked in—the final budget can be decreased, but it cannot go up. Turnberg expressed concern that city leadership has not been aggressive enough in curbing non-essential spending during this budget cycle. Turnberg noted that the commission is checking with city attorneys to determine whether moving local elections to November can be decided by the City Commission or if it requires state legislative involvement.
