Ithaca is taking a closer look at how much its elected officials should earn — and it’s turning to residents for guidance. Mayor Robert Cantelmo announced Friday that the city has formed a new Elected Official Compensation Review Advisory Committee. The five-member group will review current salaries for the mayor and Common Council members, and recommend changes based on job duties, local wage standards, and practices in other New York cities. “Decisions about elected official compensation should never be made behind closed doors or based solely on self-interest,” Cantelmo said in a statement. At least one public hearing is planned before the group submits a final report to the mayor and Common Council.
